St. Peter's Church began in 1854, on land previously owned by Peter Hunter. The first church was a frame structure, built facing Hill Street, to the west. It was soon discovered that it was too small, so was deconsecrated and moved to Catherine Street, next door to the Joe Hickey residence. A new larger church was built in 1912, which is our present building.
Over the years a procession of dedicated men and women have worked to preserve and enhance this place of worship. The first record of a vestry meeting was April 17, 1860, with thirty-one members present. Mr. Hardy and Mr. T. Matthews were wardens. The first monies recorded in the Vestry notes, April 22, 1867, were as follows: Amount of Collection $1861; Expenses $13.59; Balance on Hand $5.02 . The Synod Assessment for one year was $1.00. In comparison, the year 1993 recorded: Receipts $65,434.19; Expenses $67,721.02; Apportionment $14,681.00; Bank Balance $11,568.78.
The interim years since 1854 have seen several incumbents and many parishioners who have worked through changes and growth, and the ups and downs that are part of any church community. St. Peter's Church parish today reaches far and wide and encompasses a varied list of activities. A spiritually motivated congregation is responsible for this.
